6 Simple Running Tips from a Physiotherapist

Running can be a wonderful way to stay active, improve fitness and enjoy time outdoors.

Whether you're starting to run or preparing for a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon, a few simple principles can help you train well, stay consistent and enjoy the process.

1. Build up gradually

Give your body time to adapt to running.

Rather than increasing your distance, speed and number of runs at the same time, build your training gradually and notice how your body responds.

Steady progress is often the best progress.

2. Make easy runs easy

Not every run needs to be fast or challenging.

Easier runs give your body a chance to recover while still building fitness and consistency. A good training week can include different paces and distances.

3. Include some strength work

Running requires strength as well as endurance.

Simple exercises such as calf raises, squats, step-ups and single-leg exercises can complement your running and help prepare your body for the demands of training.

You don't need a long programme. A few appropriate exercises performed consistently can make a real difference.

4. Make recovery part of your training

Your body adapts between training sessions as well as during them.

Good sleep, nutrition, hydration and appropriate rest can all support your running and recovery.

Listen to your body and allow yourself an easier day when you need one.

5. Pay attention to recurring niggles

An occasional ache after running doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

However, if a niggle keeps returning, gradually increases or starts to change the way you run, it is worth paying attention to.

Notice what your body is telling you and respond early.

Sometimes a small adjustment to your training, strength or recovery is all that is needed.

6. Enjoy your running

It's easy to become focused on pace, distance and numbers.

But not every run needs to be about performance.

Choose routes you enjoy. Run with friends. Walk when you want to. Leave the watch behind occasionally and simply enjoy moving.

Consistency, confidence and enjoyment matter too.
